Czech is a West Slavic language. It is the majority language in the Czech Republic and spoken by Czechs worldwide. The language was known as Bohemian in English until the late 19th century. Czech is similar to and mutually intelligible with Slovak and, to a considerably lesser extent Polish and Serbian.

The first Czech language developed shortly after the first Bohemian state that emerged in the late 9th century when it was unified by the Premyslid dynasty. The oldest development stage of the Czech language called proto-Czech can be found at the end of the 10th century despite there being no written texts. It was not until the 15th century when the number of literary language users increased and the Czech language was also asserted in the administrative sector.
