Spanish is part of the Ibero-Romance group. It evolved from several languages and dialects in central-northern Iberia during the 9th century (with Arabic influences of the Andalusian period) and gradually spread, with the expansion of the Kingdom of Castile, into central and southern Iberia during the later Medieval period. Between the 15th and 19th centuries, Spanish was taken to the Americas as well as to Africa and Asia Pacific with the expansion of the Spanish Empire, where it became the most important language for government and trade. Spanish is now the most widely spoken of the Romance languages, both in terms of number of speakers and the number of countries in which it is the dominant language.
