Portuguese is an Ibero-Romance language that developed from Galician-Portuguese, spoken in the medieval Kingdom of Galicia. Portuguese has been influenced by the languages it has come into contact with and in terms of sound the language is more similar to Catalan or French than Spanish or Italian. That being said, the grammar, structure and vocabulary of the Portuguese and Spanish languages are so similar that phonetic differences do not impede intelligibility between them.

During the Age of Exploration, Portuguese sailors carried their language to far off places. The exploration followed the attempts to colonise new lands by Portugal and as a result Portuguese became a widely dispersed language in the world. Brazil and Portugal are the two primary Portuguese speaking nations.
