Italian is a Romance language spoken mainly in Europe. Italian is considered to be one of the most beautiful spoken languages in the world, often thought of as the language of opera, art, gastronomy and of course romance. Originally derived from Latin (and ancient Rome), Italian remains the closest national language to Latin.
Italian was first formalised in the 14th century through the works of Dante (The Divine Comedy), who wrote in a variety of different dialects, including his own Tuscan dialect. It is therefore not surprising that the unified standard official Italian language as we know it was borne mainly from (Dante’s) Tuscan dialect. Tuscany’s geographical location in the centre of Italy and the significance of its capital city, Florence due to the volume and diversity of its trade, gave greater importance to the region’s dialect.
