French is a Romance language spoken as a first language by most people from France, French-speaking Switzerland, Wallonia and Brussels in Belgium, Monaco, and the regions of Quebec and Acadia in Canada, as well as minorities elsewhere.
La Francophonie or the community of French-speakers is actually comprised of more than 40 countries across five continents. French is also the official language of all United Nations agencies and a large number of international organizations, including the IOC (International Olympic Committee), making it the third most spoken second language in the Union, after English and German.
Traditionally, French was the pre-eminent international language of diplomacy and international affairs as well as a lingua franca among the educated classes of Europe. This was largely due to France’s extensive colonial ambitions between the 17th and 20th centuries. During this period, French was introduced to America, Africa, Polynesia, South-East Asia, and the Caribbean and was only eclipsed by English in the 20th century. This was when Britain became increasingly influential on a global scale, becoming the leading maritime nation with an expanding empire, thereby assuming a more prominent position both culturally and economically. However, as the two major languages of the Western World, English and French naturally have contributed many words to each other; from au pair to un talkie-walkie!
