Danish Language Jobs

Spoken by: 6 million people
Spoken in: Denmark, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Germany
Danish Speakers in the UK: 18,695
Trade with UK: Overall trade in both directions is worth approximately £4 billion annually.
Interesting fact: Old East Norse, the proto language of Danish, was once widely spoken in the northeast counties of England. Many words derived from Norse, such as “gate” (gade) for street, still survive in Yorkshire and the East Midlands colonised by Danish Vikings. The city of York was once the Viking settlement of Jorvik. Several other English words also derive from Old East Norse, for example, “knife” (kniv), “husband” (husbond), “call” (kalde) and “egg” (æg).

Danish is a North Germanic language spoken by around six million people, principally in the country of Denmark. It is also spoken by 50,000 Germans of Danish ethnicity in the northern parts of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, where it holds the status of minority language. Danish is a mandatory subject in school in the Danish crown territories of the Faroe Islands and Greenland as well as the former crown holding of Iceland. Danish, together with Swedish, derives from the East Norse dialect group. Unlike Swedish and Norwegian, Danish does not have more than one regional speech norm.

Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian are mutually intelligible. Written Danish and Norwegian Bokmål are particularly close, though the phonology and the patterns of stress and intonation differ. Proficient speakers of any of the three languages can understand the others, though studies have shown that speakers of Norwegian generally understand both Danish and Swedish far better than Danes or Swedes understand each other. Both Danes and Swedes also understand Norwegian better than they understand each other’s languages.
